In Australia, December is a busy month for graduate students finishing up their final days of study.
It’s also a time when visual effects students are fine tuning their reels to get them ready to send off to studios. We’d say anxiety levels are on the high side.
So, when Luma was asked to attend a few industry events at The University of South Australia and the Academy of Interactive Entertainment in Melbourne, we happily agreed to share our knowledge with students seeking to break into the industry.
VFX Industry Night
UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA
Andrew Zink (CG Supervisor) was invited to speak at the University of South Australia’s VFX Industry Night on December 1st. Andrew gave students insight into the recruitment process at Luma and tips on how to have a standout application.
Key takeaway: Only show your best work in your reel
Other guest speakers included representatives from WETA, Rising Sun Pictures, and Framestore.
Luma’s VP / Head of Culture, Jamy Zink, visited the AIE Melbourne campus located just down the road from Luma to talk to graduating students about the recruitment process and culture at Luma.
Following the talk, Andrew Zink (CG Supervisor) and Raphael. A Pimentel (Animation Director) reviewed graduate reels and gave feedback on how to further improve their reels before sending them off to studios.
Key Takeaway: Show your best work first and clearly state the work you were responsible for in your reel
Andrew and Raphael are intimately involved in the recruitment process at Luma for their departments. They are responsible for reviewing applications and conducting interviews with candidates.
A few days after the Graduate Showcase, Jamy Zink attended the AIE Graduation held at the Convention Center in Melbourne, Victoria.
She gave an inspirational speech on how to kill it at life (haha, no really), and touched on milestones in her career, how she landed the gig at Luma, and how she’s managed to work her way up the ranks.
Head over to our Careers Page for current open positions at both studios.
Check out our 0-100: Reel Them In Series which showcases artists throughout different departments and how they get their start at Luma. We’ve even included the reels they applied to Luma with!
