Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2

The cosmic adventure continues in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 as the unconventional team unravel the mystery of Peter Quill’s true parentage— turns out Peter has astronomical daddy issues.

In this action-packed film, Luma completed visual effects work for the end tag of the film where Sovereign leader, Ayesha, reveals the birthing cocoon holding Adam Warlock. Luma created a striking CG environment for this sequence, which included creating hundreds of animated humans inside blue and radiant gold pods. The crew also created Adam’s giant gold encrusted birthing cocoon that is revealed at the end of the sequence.

Luma was responsible for lighting the bright reflective chamber to achieve the dramatic look. The only light sources the crew had to work with were the large crystal chandeliers hanging from the ceiling in the center of the chamber and inset lighting along the floor. Luma added underlights to intensify the ambience and then did additional sculpting in comp to achieve the final look.

We used every trick in the book.

Luma received a detailed 3D concept of Adam Warlock’s giant birthing pod, but it was up to Luma to bring this technological cocoon to life. “The concept was pretty far along, but there was still a lot of creative freedom in how we detailed it out and where we pushed the look dev. We added a bunch of cables hooking up to it and FX elements whirling around inside and around the head of the cocoon. We also lit the cocoon in a way that would give it a dramatic and mysterious feel,” says Jared.

He may have been your father, Quill, but he wasn’t your daddy.
