Deadpool
Whatever they did to me made me totally indestructible… and completely unfuckable.

Based on Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, Deadpool tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary, Wade Wilson (played by Ryan Reynolds). His world comes crashing down when the evil scientist Ajax tortures, disfigures and transforms him into Deadpool, leaving him with accelerated healing powers and a bit of a smart-ass attitude. He now uses these new skills to hunt down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

Luma teamed up with Fox and got in on the fun, delivering nearly 200 shots including the scrapyard fight sequence, enhancing the action with dig-doubles, gore, weapon replacements, muzzle flashes and ordnance simulations.

Luma replaced a number of backgrounds incorporated into the the helicarrier: the team built a facade and added CG extensions and matte paintings over the base model. Lighting was a key concern: the actors in the plates were often brightly lit from the sun, and they would glow when placed the dark helicarrier behind them. There was a real craft to getting it right, and Luma artists were meticulous in everything from adding replacements, to actually going in and painting down the highlights.

Luma got in on the gore too. The team added a digital blade to Deadpool’s sword, which he plunges into an opponent's stomach and then jumps on the weapon to slice him in half. This was a hybrid shot where the team blended in a digi-double for the wound area and added the guts and blood. Luma took this approach for all but the most extreme action shots.

Luma used practical gore elements, creating special rigs—a meat balloon of sorts that explodes with corn syrup and fragments of meat, and a pressurized side can filled with fake blood. Blood simulations were generated using Houdini.

We had done so much gore work over the years, that we pulled from our libraries of intestines, pancreas’ and anything else that splurges from a body when being attacked by an anti hero.
Daddy needs to express some rage.
